If you have trouble getting an ssh connection, the following has in at least one case resolved the issue:

I ran system-config-network, looked at the settings and hit save & quit. I.e. I didn't actually change anything.
Then restarted networking. (/etc/init.d/network restart) and voila, a route was born.
