SF.gov will pull the transcript for any video embedded from Youtube. Usually this is an automatic machine-generated transcript.

How to add a video transcript

  1. Add video to a page on SF.gov using the Youtube URL. Don’t add anything in the transcript text field yet.

  2. Save the page (as a draft will work). This will import the video and transcript from Youtube.

  3. Go to edit the page again, and you should see the transcript.

  4. Edit the transcript and save your changes.

You can repeat step 4 as many times as you like. If you replace the video with a new video, it will re-import the new video’s transcript from Youtube and your previous transcript will be lost.

Writing good transcripts

Because the automatic transcript only transcribes the audio, you will need to manually review and edit.
