Data stories

Use for sharing and summarizing live data sets

Goals

Encourage people to consume data by providing a guided way to access and understand data that is current and updated. Promote transparency and showcase our open data.

Audience

Journalists, community activists, City employees, and general public with an interest in a topic.

How it works

Data stories can include PowerBI embeds to display dynamically updating data. To get the PowerBI template and instructions, see the Data visualization standards for SF.gov. Be sure to use the template.

The table of contents is automatically generated from the page header structure.

Create a collection of related Data stories by adding them all to a Resource collection. A “Part of” link to the Resource collection will then be automatically included near the title of the Data story.

Within the embed:

  • View data source links back to your data set when you add the URL.

  • Data notes at the bottom of Power BI embeds show in an accordion, but can be as long as you need.

Notes

In the future, we envision supporting other data embed sources, such as Tableau. Currently we only support PowerBI.
