Boilerplate language about SF.gov

Use this copy-able language from Digital Services about SF.gov whenever you need a quick introduction:

City departments are moving to SF.gov, the City-wide website. SF.gov is the most accessible, equitable website in the City. It is mobile-friendly, works for people in data poverty, and offers human translation in Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino. SF.gov is also safe, stable, consistent and cost-effective for the City.

Hundreds of thousands of people use SF.gov every month to find out about services and get information. (See web analytics in our Google Data Studio.)

Digital Services is working with dozens of departments to move their websites this year. They are helping departments rewrite or archive their webpages, and training department content leads on how to use SF.gov.

Send an email after your SF.gov soft launch

Definitely plan to announce it to your coworkers after you publish your pages, but before your site is redirected and fully launched. Here is an example email from the Controller’s Office. If you want, you can copy and paste from it to create your own email.

Colleagues,

We’re excited to announce that the Controller’s Office is moving to SF.gov. This move is part of a wider citywide initiative that’s helping departments make their content more findable, accessible, and understandable.

Starting this Friday, July 29, the Controller's Office will officially have a presence on SF.gov

What Looks Familiar

SF.gov launched in May 2019 and is managed by SF Digital Services. Some City departments have completely moved over to SF.gov, while others, including the Controller’s Office, are moving content over in phases until the end of 2022.

This phased migration means that we’ll have content living in two places at the same time — http://sfcontroller.org and SF.gov — while we move material over in batches and build out new pages. So, as you click through our pages on SF.GOV, you’ll notice that in some cases, you’ll be linked to content on our old site, http://sfcontroller.org. As new pages are created on SF.gov, we’ll redirect the old pages to the new ones.

What Looks Different

Unlike our old website, where content is predominantly segmented by departmental divisions, SF.gov will be arranged according to content types that serve different needs, like filling out forms, finding meeting details, or accessing a service or resource. Take some time to click around and get familiar with where things are.

Changes to Expect in Coming Months

From July 2022, any new content will be published only on SF.gov. Subject matter experts throughout the department will continue to be consulted as we build out new pages and take down outdated content as it becomes stale. Almost all content will be moved to SF.gov by the end of 2022. The exceptions will be the interactive dashboards and maps, OpenBook, and our report portal, which will continue to exist in their current form until later in 2023.

Where to Access Old Content

If you’re looking for content and can’t seem to find it on SF.gov, not to worry. All of the Controller’s Office old web pages are archived and still accessible here, appearing just as they were at the beginning of June 2022. Note that these pages will no longer be updated, but you’ll still be able to click through them and copy/paste any text from them.

The Team

It's taken a dedicated team of project managers, planners, and researchers to get this far. Thank you to Emily Reid Vontsolos, Claire Stone, Hunter Wang, and Joanna Zywno who’ve been the core Controller's Office website team for the past nine months. And thank you to the numerous colleagues who’ve provided their input and feedback for the pages we've built so far. Lastly, we’re grateful to our colleagues in Digital Services for initiating this major website project and for supporting us through this migration!

More to come!
