June 2020 newsletter

This newsletter was emailed manually, but subsequent newsletters were sent with Mailchimp and then Emma.

Hi SF.gov publishers,

We’ve been launching some new things over the past few months, and we’d like to share. If you can join us, you will need to have Zoom on your computer or phone to see what we’re sharing, but it’s free.

Campaigns

We’ve launched a new content type on SF.gov, campaigns. You can see one for Dear SF, and another for Youth services during the Coronavirus outbreak. Campaigns are built to be very visual, with plenty of room for photos and even video. If you host your video on YouTube, you can pull in and edit the transcript from there in Drupal.

Campaigns are for things you need to convince San Franciscans to do. So they should only be live while you are actively marketing the campaign. Don’t leave them live to get mouldy even if the advice is timeless. No one trusts old content.

Campaigns can be translated if there is a need, and if they are at a 5th grade reading level.

Human translations

You can now ask for human translation of pages on SF.gov! We can translate into Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino. It usually takes at least 3 days to get a page translated. More info: http://tiny.cc/04iepz

We only translate content that is:

  • for San Franciscans

  • at or below a 5th grade reading level (if it’s not, we can help!)

  • free of jargon

  • in clear, in plain English

  • final copy

Once you translate a page you will then need to manage that content always, so it’s a significant amount of extra work for content leads.

Analytics

We’ve got a new analytics dashboard for SF.gov. Check out our spike when the Health Order came out, and that we’re now getting over half the views on SF.gov on mobile.

Show and tell

Join us this coming Wednesday, June 24, at 10am on Zoom. We’ll be showing all the features above.

You will also get a sneak peak of a new content type, Public Bodies (with meetings, minutes, and agendas).

If you would like to attend, email persis.howe@sfgov.org.
